Wan Zack boost for Malaysia

Malaysia winger Wan Zack Haikal Wan Nor could feature in the AFF Suzuki Cup semi-final clash with Thailand on Thursday after making a quicker than expected recovery from a thigh injury.

Wan Zack, who did not play in the first leg on Sunday that ended 1-1, took part in training on Wednesday evening and reported that he was pain free.

The 21-year-old impressed for the defending champions during the group stage, scoring in the 4-1 win against Laos and setting up a crucial goal in the decisive 2-0 victory over Indonesia.

But the Harimau Muda star - named the Singapore League’s Best Young Player last season - tore a muscle in the front of his right thigh in training, raising the possibility that he would miss the rest of the AFF Suzuki Cup.

Khyril Muhymeen Zambri and Shakir Shaari, who also missed the match in Kuala Lumpur through injury, joined Wan Zack in training on Wednesday but coach K. Rajagobal is unsure whether to risk the trio in the crunch encounter.

“We have players returning from injury and I will consult the team doctor and physiotherapist to see if they will be available for selection,” he told Malaysia media after the training session.

“(Maybe) we cannot risk fielding the players as they might get injured again.”

The second leg of the semi-final between Thailand and Malaysia will be played at Bangkok’s Supachalasai Stadium with a 7pm kick off.
